Finally getting around to writing this (almost a month late) after my trip to Panama, but overall found it to be a fantastic trip and a country I'd love to visit again.
Trip Length: 10 days from Friday, August 25 - Monday, September 4
Destination(s): I started and ended my trip in Panama City (about 4-ish days total) and spent the remaining 6 days in between staying in Bocas Town in Bocas del Toro
Accommodation: Started in the Waldorf Astoria in Panama > an AirBNB in Bocas Town > a private room at the Selina in Casco Viejo
Budget: I didn't really keep track of how much I spent to be honest; I'm definitely not a luxury traveler but am both somewhat budget conscious & intent on enjoying my trip. Some rough numbers:

• Flights were $400 (California-Panama City RT) and $125 (Panama City-Bocas del Toro RT)
• Hotels were $500 (three nights-ish at Waldorf Astoria), $250 (AirBNB in Bocas), and ~$200 (Selina in Casco Viejo)
• Food and misc. expenditure - probably around $500-600? I did eat out for every meal and also brought back some coffee and chocolate for my family.

Activities:

• Panama City - Honestly, I'm not the most structured traveler but made sure to hit some of the major attractions in Panama City (Miraflores Lock, Gatun Lake, just walking around Casco Viejo, the Panama Canal museum) and definitely did not regret it. I really enjoyed the history museums and the nature ones (Biomuseo was a little expensive though I did enjoy it and the Punta Culebra Nature Center was absolutely fantastic) as well as spending a morning in Old Panama. I also did a lot of eating and can't count the amount of ceviche, octopus, and fresh juice I enjoyed during my trip. There are lots of great little restaurants throughout Casco Viejo and other parts of Panama City and I definitely indulged.
• Bocas del Toro - I stayed in Bocas Town (which was quite small and walkable) but also took boats to the surrounding islands to visit as well as to the Floating Bar, where I spent a couple afternoons relaxing and swimming! I'd probably say the highlights were visiting Zapatilla island (a mostly pristine and beautiful beach, and a small enough island to walk around and enjoy the nature) and the Up in the Hill farm tour on Bastimentos island - the family running it is so lovely and it was great to get a tour of the farm before sitting down and enjoying lunch.

What Went Wrong: Somewhat minor things - I was a little careless (and maybe too trusting of my mid-level Spanish) when booking my flight from Panama City>Bocas del Toro and accidentally booked for completely wrong dates. Luckily their customer service was fantastic and fixed it with little fuss. I also didn't realize how cash-based Bocas del Toro would be; I brought a good amount but also ended up withdrawing from a local ATM with a higher than average service fee (note: there's only 1 ATM on the island and it occasionally runs out of cash, so I definitely recommend bringing a little more than you think you'll need).
If I was there longehad done a little bit more research in advance:

• I would have stayed on a different island in Bocas del Toro (probably Solarte or Cristobal). I enjoyed my time there but Bocas town was definitely on the tourist-y side and there was a ton of construction on (what I think were probably) new restaurants, hotels, etc. That being said, there are some great restaurants/cafes in Bocas town!
• I would have organized a day or two in San Blas and Valle de Anton, visited Barro Colorado (to see the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute), and visited the Embera tribe as well.

Recommendations: It seemed like most visitors (based purely on observation) were from nearby Latin American countries - though I did meet a number of Americans as well. If you don't speak any Spanish, I'd recommend downloading Google translate ahead of time/learning some basic phrases; while a good number of people spoke English, I met enough people that did not that I was grateful to know as much Spanish (enough but definitely not a ton) as I do. I don't know many people personally that have visited Panama (but also don't think it's that far off the beaten path) but I really think it was worth it! The food and people were amazing, and the culture and history of the country is incredibly interesting (and sad, at times).
Final Verdict: Such an incredible place to visit with lots of history, amazing food, and so much to do! Highly recommend to everyone.

Although I've "solo travelled" (took a flight by myself) to Europe last year (the farthest I've travelled alone aside from going to the US couple times alone), but caught up a relative in Germany who was my companion whilst travelling within Schengen. This coming one will be exciting as it will be just by myself all alone! 🙈 I'm contemplating whether to book for the Peru Hop or just use their public transport system to go south?
Pls suggest me some other activities to do during my free days in Cusco too. Thank you 🙏🏽
P.S. I'm one bagging (carryon backpack) and will be bringing Diamox with me for altitude sickness.

•January 24 ~ take a bus to Arequipa and make a pit stop in Nazca to check it out (is it recommended to take the airpline ride to see the geoglyphs from atop? Or the viewpoint is okay?)
•January 25 ~ Arequipa day tour
•January 26 ~ last day in Arequipa and take a bus to Puno and explore the Uros Island in Lake Titicaca and stay for the night.
•January 27 ~ take an early bus to Copacabana, Bolivia and tour around town (hoping that altitude sickness wouldn't be that harsh on me)
•January 28 ~ explore Isla del Sol before heading to La Paz.
•January 29 ~ explore city of La Paz, ride their cable car transit system, and visit Valle de la Luna. Take a night bus to Uyuni.
•January 30 ~ explore the salt flats with red planet tour that starts from 10am and ends at 6pm then take a night bus back to La Paz at 9pm.
•January 31 ~ Arrive in La Paz at 6am, rest and stay for the night.
•February 1 ~ take the 7am bus to Cusco.
•February 2 ~ free day in Cusco
•February 3 ~ Sacred Valley tour
•February 4 ~ free day in Cusco or maybe do the Rainbow mountain tour if I can?
•February 5 ~ Cusco
•February 6 ~ take the train to Aguas Calientes and stay there for 1 night to catch the early morning bus to Machu Picchu (maybe try to see MP at sunset?

I'm planning a Peru trip in June with my mom. Please help us by critiquing the itinerary I came up with. Feel free to suggest filler activities anywhere you see fit and share your restaurant recommendations! We like a mix ranging from street food to fine dining. Thank you in advance.
Day 1 - Depart Orlando - Lima. Arrive in Lima around 3:30 pm on a Saturday. We are staying in Barranco. No plans for the rest of the day (yet) except dinner reservations for 8 pm at Mayta. I would have loved to go to Central/Maido but the food might be a little too deconstructed and adventurous for my mom. What else can we see/do today? I'm into minimal techno/house and will bring my mom with me to an event if there is something good happening lol.
Day 2 - Explore Lima. Barranco Ultimate Peruvian Food Tour. Seems a little expensive but the reviews are fantastic. Ends around 3 pm in which we will head to Plaza Mayor followed by Miraflores to watch the sunset over the Pacific. Possibly do the paragliding? No dinner plans yet, open to suggestions. Love ceviche.
Day 3 - Fly Lima - Cusco. Spend the day resting and acclimatizing. Our accommodations are near Qorikancha. Walk around and explore the city center.
Day 4 - Open day. Possibly take one of the open-roof bus tours of Cusco or a guided tour of some historic landmarks like Plaza de Armas, the Cathedral of Cusco, and the Temple of the Sun.
Day 5 - Sacred Valley Tour. ATV Quadbikes Around Sacred Valley Tour Moray & Maras Salineras. It's approx. a 6-hour tour. We have the option to do 7 am or 1 pm.
Day 6 - On this day my mom and I will separate. I will be doing a tour of Humantay Lake. She feels it might be too physically challenging for her. My mom loves to shop and she loves spas so any suggestions for activities for her on this day would be greatly appreciated.
Day 7 - Train to Aguas Calientes. Early taxi to Poroy train station to AC with Peru Rail. Going with the Vistadome for the views on the way there. Take an afternoon tour of Machu Picchu Circuit 1 or 2? Stay overnight in AC.
We want to get an afternoon and morning view of MP so are willing to pay for the bus on two different days. How can we book the bus in advance for the day we arrive? Is a guide recommended for both Circuit 4 and Circuit 1/2 and what can we expect to pay for one at the gate?
Day 8 - Hike Huayna Picchu + return to Cusco. Wake up early and take the first bus to MP. Do Circuit 4 and hike Huayna Picchu. Spend the rest of the day in the thermal baths and take the afternoon train (Expedition for comfort this time) back to Poroy station in Cusco. Take a taxi back to our hotel.
Side note: When telling my mom about Huayna Picchu, I accidentally sent her a link to a video clip that mentioned "the stairs of death" LOL. She almost backed out. I was able to convince her to do this hike with me though. She will be 55 a few days prior to our trip. How difficult will this be and are regular sneakers ok?
Day 9 - Relaxation + shopping day. Spa day at Palacio del Inka. End the day with a pisco sour class and a nice dinner.
Day 10 - Fly home in the afternoon/evening. Brunch, last min shopping, and packing before departing.
